Record of the Day: “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)” by Blakroc

2 11 2009

If you don’t know, Blakroc is the brainchild of Dame Dash and The Black Keys — a hip-hop, blue-rock infused album dropping on, of course, Black Friday. The guest list is long, Mos-Def, RZA, Jim Jones, Raekwon, Q-Tip, Ludacris, ODB and Pharoah Monche, among others.

This particular record, “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)” with Mos Def and Jim Jones excites me. If the rest of the album is anything like this, then we’re looking at a smash album. Mos Def channels his inner “Good Night” and “Drunk and Hot Girls” from Kanye’s Graduation to sing a smooth chorus. He’s the blueprint for rappers that want to sing. Drake, take some notes.

Jim Jones has never been anything more than a Cam’ron shout out (“Zeeky, Jim Jones”), but he’s got some great lines and definitely sticks to the theme of the song — pure heart. I can’t tell you how many rappers ruin songs because what they rap about has nothing to do with the point of the song. Take “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”. Listen to Jay-Z’s rhymes and ask yourself if he got the point of the song. Not even close. It’s like watching and epically bad game show player, they’re wrong on just so many levels.
